Yesterday we looked at car racing circuits in a painting. In a way, you could consider such circuits as maps and maps can be another interesting inspiration. Too obvious? Well, you can always try and make something less obvious by creating new and exciting connections, for example combining maps with science.
Artist Chris Drury collided in his piece "Rockies/Karakoram" (2003) woven maps and printed echocardiograms. The connection being that climbing a mountain range makes your heart race.
Maps of mountain ranges were overprinted with echocardiograms, then cut into strips and woven together. The weave was then pushed into a dish shape and set within the wider echocardiogram pattern. According to the artist, the piece is a way to make a connection between a microcosm and a macrocosm. The artwork is on view at the Wellcome Collection, in London.
