In yesterday's post, an obituary dedicated to Elio Fiorucci, we mentioned the fact that it is quite difficult to find some original Fiorucci clothes as fans would buy them and usually wear them a lot.
Among the rarest bits there are probably jumpers and knitwear (quite often victims of clothes-eating moths), yet there are a few pieces around.
The images in this post show for example a Fiorucci jumper with a matching shawl. They come from my family archive and belonged to my late auntie Flavia.
Though these pieces can probably be dated (according to my family's collective memories and photographic evidence) between 1984 and 1985 and were made in 100% wool, they are still in great condition (probably also thanks to some maniac family skills when it comes to preserving clothes...).
The pieces were probably from the collection Fiorucci made after seeing shirts with floral patterns during a trip to Mexico.
Both the sweater and the shawl were indeed characterised by a multi-coloured wool embroidery of flowers on a black background.
The floral pattern extended from the front and reached the right shoulder on the sweater, while the flowers were mainly concentrated on the central portion of the shawl.
The latter was actually a versatile piece since it could have been worn as a shawl and a scarf or could have been turned into a skirt.
The main inspiration must have been Frida Kahlo and the combination of black and floral patterns instantly makes you think about the colours of the Frida Kahlo portrait taken by photographer (and Frida's lover) Nickolas Muray in the late '30s.
This ensemble is definitely not a classic Fiorucci piece in neon colours or crazy patterns (though the colourful embroidery and the prominent location of the label on the jumper preserve that Fiorucci craziness...), but it is the tangible proof that the brand catered to a wide range of people with a vast range of tastes. This was indeed the sort of versatile design that a sensible grown up woman may have invested her money in.
