Readers familiar with the wonderful works made at the Tilburg-based TextielMuseum's TextielLab will remember Jan Koen Lomans' designs. Mentioned in the TextielMuseum 2013 Yearbook, Jan Koen Lomans employs traditional techniques such as tufting to achieve unique results.
Koen Lomans' practice is suspended between design and art and he has employed textiles to create pieces tackling complex themes such as decay and transience, showcased last year at his solo exhibition at the Central Museum, Utrecht.
This December the artist will be presenting at the Tuft department of the TextileLab his research (that started started in 2012) with Karen Zeedijk allowing visitors to discover new ways of (re)using this traditional technique.
The tufting technique remains for Koen Lomans a vehicle to create abstract art pieces and develop explorations and "tufted installations" that have a special tactile quality about them. At the moment, Koen Lomans and Karen Zeedijk are also working on a new and exciting project that employs tufting and we will hopefully discover more about it in a future post. Stay tuned.
