Recent posts looked at architecture, at fashion designs characterised by perforations - such as selected pieces from Azzedine Alaïa's latest collection - and at the interplay between shadow and light in conjunction with the transformative elements of architecture. Let's continue this thread with a poster on display in the Elements of Architecture section at the Central Pavilion of the Giardini at the 14th Venice International Architecture Exhibition.
The poster is part of the 182 enlarged adverts (from journals and publications including the American Architectural Record, Pencil Points/Progressive Architecture; the British Architectural Review and the Italian Casabella, Domus and L'architettura. Cronache e storia) for the elements explored in the pavilion - Ceiling, Façade, Window, Corridor, Floor, Balcony, Fireplace, Wall, Toilet, Escalator, Elevator, Ramp, Stair and Door.
The adverts collected on one of the walls of the introductory hall look at the connections between architecture, industrialisation, standardisation and luxury as well. This poster is taken from a 1965 issue of L'architettura. Cronache e storia and advertises a solar screen in Sicron 548 resin (a trademark of Montecatini Edison S.p.A., this material was a homopolymer of vinyl chloride prepared by polymerisation in aqueous solution).
The interesting thing about the screen is its geometric form reminiscent of futuristic shapes favoured during the Space Age and the material it was made in. Maybe even vintage adverts from architectural magazines could provide us with rather intriguing inspirations for a fashion collection, for studies on façades and surfaces in fashion and for comparisons with current trends.
