Pioneering Dutch design company Droog will be travelling to Moscow in a few days' time for its first ever exhibition in Russia.
Entitled "New Luxuries" the event is organised by The Moscow Design Museum as part of the current Netherlands-Russia year and will feature fifty objects selected by Droog Director and exhibition curator Renny Ramakers from the company collection.
The title of the event is particularly symbolic: the word "luxury" immediately conjures up in our minds design pieces and in certain Russian circles "luxury" is what money - rather than good taste - can buy, but Droog will turn the concept around, and present pieces that combine traditions, the rich heritage of the past and contemporary design.
The pieces that will be included in the exhibition may indeed be made with ordinary and traditional materials, but they are always characterised by a certain twist, something unexpected that breaks the routine and makes them engaging, like the Droog classic Chest of Drawers by Tejo Remy, or the recent reinterpretations of the Rijksmuseum collection as well as brand new products, such as an opulent chandelier by Studio Makkink and Bey.
Ramakers stated in a press release: "In Moscow many people like to show off with luxury goods. In this exhibition we want to show that luxurious goods do not have to be about precious materials, elaborate handcraft and exclusive labels. They can also be made of the most ordinary materials with simple means. Our exhibition reveals the luxuries of imagination and pleasure."
The exhibition runs from 12th November 2013 to 12th January 2014 at the Moscow Manege, and will be accompanied by a series of lectures, talks and events featuring Dutch designers.
