We looked at the history of Italian bespoke shoe company Dal Co' in some previous posts. As you may remember, Alberto Dal Co’ was born in 1902 in Traversetolo where he started working as a shoemaker at a very young age. When he moved to Rome he first opened a bespoke shoe shop in Via Crispi 35, then, in 1952, he moved to Porta Pinciana.
Alberto Dal Co' loved taking inspiration for his creations from exotic countries and mix them with a touch of surrealism. In 1958 he came up with a pair of shoes characterised by a single-seam construction in which the toe shape derived from traditional Indo-Pakistani footwear, but added to it a court jester bell on its point and a sort of Dadaist heel.
Soon Alberto became very popular among the stars and celebrities of those times: among his clients there were Sofia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida, Linda Christian, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Soraya, Farah Diba, Audrey Hepburn, Caroll Baker, Silvana Mangano, Anna Moffo and Brigitte Bardot.
French actress and style icon Bardot reappears on Dal Co's recently released tote bag to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary.
"For Dal Co's celebratory 'She Walks in Beauty' tote bag we chose an image that calls to mind the '60s and the history of the brand," Silvia Petrucci-Dal Co', Creative Director of the brand recounts.
"The image portraying Brigitte Bardot shopping at the store owned by my grandfather Alberto, founder of our maison - selected from the Rome-based Archivio Marco Garzia - calls to mind the style of those years and it's a cinematic and byronian tribute to all those women who want to walk in beauty. We chose a punk lettering for the motto printed on the bag - 'She Walks in Beauty' - as Bardot has always been a sort of rebel icon."
Dal Co' is giving three lucky Irenebrination readers the chance to win the bag (colours: natural, black, fuchsia): just write an email by 5.00 pm today (CET) to [email protected] stating your name, surname and address and add in the subject "Irenebrination Readers Giveaway" (please state your favourite colour if you want, but remember that it's not guaranteed you will get it since there are only three bags and the giveaway works on a first come first served basis). Good luck! (PS if you don't win the bag, don't despair: you can still order it from the company, just write an email to Dal Co's press office address to know more about it).
