A while back Architecture and Design Scotland (A+DS), an Executive NDPB of the Scottish Government set to promote architecture and design through a range of projects and programmes, launched at Glasgow's Lighthouse (Level 2 open from Monday to Saturday, 10:30-17:00), a new library of sustainable materials called "Material Considerations".
Allowing visitors to explore and analyse a wide range of building products, from more traditional to emerging low carbon ones, the library offers architects, builders and students the opportunity to get hands on with materials such as timber, slate, sheep's wool and other innovative products and also demonstrates how materials were used in recent Scottish buildings in interesting ways.
The main purpose of the library is to showcase traditional and emerging low carbon building products and components (available in samples or full-scale mock-ups), all of them green and friendly, while promoting and encouraging innovation in construction.
The library is also open to people who want to check out reference materials such as books and manufacturers.
Among the most fascinating products on display at the library there are waste recycled plastics: some have a linoleum-like consistency, others are made with hard plastic sheets and can be used for kitchen worktops, desktop surfaces, wall finishes, furniture and signage.
The best thing about these materials are their colourful effects: since they integrate different plastics they could be described as a maelstrom of colours, from dark to bright with glittery nuances.
The palette in these materials somehow made me think about the graphic splashes of colours and paint brushes on solid black backgrounds (applied to rather basic pieces from the male wardrobe - including T-shirts, cotton shorts, and jersey track pants) in Christopher Kane Men's Spring/Summer 2013 collection.
Though fashion may not be the main purpose of the "Material Considerations" library, it looks like its contents may still inspire fashion-related projects.
