I was first exposed to Mareunrol’s work when, a while back, Latvian designer Mārīte Mastiņa presented her project at the International Talent Support (ITS)#6. I remember I was absolutely mesmerised by the quirky details of the designs and the gigantic headpieces representing laid tables with birthday cakes on top or piles of stacked dishes.
Mastina founded Mareunrol’s in 2002 together with another Latvian designer, Rolands Pēterkops. Together they also developed a denim line called MRJeans and throughout the years they kept on designing perfectly wearable items with surreal and striking details.
At the end of October they presented their latest collection, “Private Detective”, at the [moment] event in Riga through a noir video shot by Latvian director Kristīne Kursiša. I recently got in touch with them and Rolands recounted me how Mareunrol’s was founded, the genesis of their latest collection and their future plans.
Before working with Kursiša, the duo already collaborated with several other directors, creating costumes for theatre plays, movies and music videos. Rolands said that since they started and launched their own label the most important lesson they learnt is “tolerance, ability to give judgement and find place for challenging criticism on our designs.”
For the time being they aren't sure they will be at any fashion show in Europe too soon, but they wish so and hope that in five years’ time they will be happy “working as fashion designers and being a married couple". You'd better keep an eye on them as, Rolands told me, they will be putting an even greater emphasis on creating art-based fashion in future.
